About English Hardwood Furniture

We specialise in making bespoke furniture to measure and much time is devoted to designing pieces for individual customers.workshop The design service is, of course free of charge and without obligation. Where neccessary drawings are produced of the proposed piece prior to commencing.

oak log ready to load on sawmillThe actual process of furniture making starts with the selection of timbers - mainly from local sawmills.

All of the timber we use comes from sustainable sources.

sawmill in actionWe also have our own saw milling facility where locally felled trees can be converted into boards - then air dried and finally kiln dried ready for making into furniture.

To "air-dry" fresh sawn hardwood takes about 1 year per inch of thickness.

Visits to local sawmills or sourcing of "in the round" timber to mill ourselves.

Construction of furniture

Time honoured techniques such as "pegging" and "draw dowling" are used to ensure strength and durability

Finishing

At least four coats or oil or wax are used to protect the surfaces and bring out the natural lustre of the grain.

Top quality, solid fittings are sourced and fitted

Delivery

Mostly we deliver with our own transport which ensures careful handling

3 Tuns Osmotherley Most of our work is for the domestic market but a few years ago we were commissioned to provide furniture for the excellently appointed Three Tuns in Osmotherley.

The brief was to bring the domestic dining room into the restaurant. With a creative mix of traditional and contemporary pieces of furniture and hard wood panels. The result is a masterpiece of fine craftsmanship.

You can witness more of our work as you enter another well known eatery - The Crab and Lobster commissioned carved doors.
