English Hardwood Furniture Makers
Nigel Dixon - Cabinet Maker
Nigel is a designer/maker who constructs all types of furniture mainly from english oak, signing each piece with his carved woodworm trademark. He served his apprenticeship with Robert Thompson's craftsmen of Kilburn – better known as The Mouseman.
The high standard of craftsmanship he aquired then is now second nature, as is an uncompromising attention to detail.
However it is in the field of design that Nigel has shown an innovative flair. He draws his inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, and in particular Charles Rennie Mackintosh. His love of far eastern culture can also be seen as an influence on his designs. So how to describe his now unique style?
A recent article in the press has described Nigel's work as 'when the Mouseman met Rennie Mackintosh'.
Paul Bulmer - Furniture Maker
Paul is a self taught furniture maker who began his career with wood, and quite literally in the woods! Working as a tree surgeon and forester in Yorkshire in the 1980's, he used to sell timber to timber-merchants and sawmills who in turn would sell the processed wood to furniture makers. Paul decided to cut out all the middlemen by mastering the whole process, from felling trees to making furniture.
In 1987 a small sawmill was established and timber was stockpiled ready for the next phase. With the help of a few colleagues (master chair maker and cabinet maker John Harrison and furniture designer Humphrey Holland) Paul was ready to launch his own furniture workshop in 1991 at Topcliffe, North Yorkshire.
His intimate knowledge of hardwood timbers and an innate skill ensured the success of the venture and with the arrival of Nigel Dixon in 1997 the team was complete.
Paul Bulmer works exclusively in sustainable English hardwoods such as oak, ash, sycamore and beech.
